The first day of classes are always scary and nerve wracking. You have to find your classes and you end up getting lost, or you don’t know where to search for a textbook. There is a lot that should be done to avoid first day jitters. These tips can help you for the rest of your college years but most importantly, get you ready for what to expect as a freshman.

1. Registering for Classes: Do’s and Don’ts!

When registering for classes, always make sure to look on ratemyprofessor.com to find out how the professor is for the class. If the ratings and reviews are low, it’s best to avoid that professor. Check your college Facebook group for more information about a class, professor, students selling textbooks, supplies or files for PDFs of textbooks.

2. File for FAFSA

Watch out for FAFSA deadlines. The quicker you fill out your FAFSA application, the faster you will get financial aid. Students who file late may have to wait a while for their financial aid to be disbursed, which will eventually keep them from paying their bill on time.

3. Don’t Forget to Pay Your Bill!

Pay your bill. New systems have been implemented every year, every semester, to ensure a more efficient way of paying your dues, registering for classes, etc. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your semester bill, it is strongly recommended that you visit the financial aid and bursar office. At the financial aid office, they explain several options in paying for your bill, whether it’s a loan, scholarships, payment plan.

4. Keeping up with classes:

It’s always good to exchange contact information with at least 2 students from a class. In case you can’t make it to class, they can catch you up with the work you missed. Also, always email your professor when you are unable to attend class.

5. Advising

It is important to visit your advisor before the semester and during the semester. Your advisor will guide you through what classes you need to fulfill your requirements. If you don’t have an advisor assigned to you, there is also the head of the department that can assist you with this process.

Don’t be scared.

College is stressful, that is something that I can’t deny. However, as a student, we must go the extra mile to make sure we have every resource available. The college community is very helpful, so always take advantage of that!
